It's too late to ban travel into the United States.
The United States restricted travel from China on February 2 and Europe on March 13. However, by March 8, covid-19 had been circulating in New York City community. By March 15, the community transmission of the virus had been widespread.
The virus that spreads most closely matches the strain that spreads most in Europe rather than in China. President Donald Trump has repeatedly accused the virus of failing to stop its spread to the United States.
According to the report, when the trump government imposed travel restrictions on Europe, the import of the virus and the community spread of the disease began in New York City. When the epidemic began in New York City, testing was limited, allowing people who did not find cases to spread the virus.
Trump repeatedly pointed out that his travel ban is evidence of his government's effective response to the pandemic, and claimed on a recent Tuesday that "we have saved millions of people, possibly millions of lives.".
The new study looked at data collected by the New York Department of health and mental health from March 1 to 20, the early days of the U.S. pandemic. The Department announced on March 8 that the community continued to spread.
The Department examined specimens collected from people who went to the emergency room, which had flu like symptoms. Of the 544 samples tested, 36 (6.6%) were positive for New Coronavirus.
Through additional sequencing of the samples, the virus strain is more similar to the one spread in Europe than in China. The report says this means that New Coronavirus is likely to be introduced to New York through Europe or from other parts of the United States.
CNN reported in April that two separate research projects launched earlier this year made the same suggestion, suggesting that the virus might have spread in cities earlier than people thought.
According to Johns Hopkins University, there are 3497000 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the United States, which killed 137000 Americans.
CNN's Kevin liptak and Maegan Vazquez contributed to the report.
